What is the reason behind why the lights in some restaurant are so dimly lit that you can barely see your food?

Romantic atmosphere. Everyone knows if you want to do a seduction, you feed your partner a good meal by candlelight. Unfortunately, restaurants have taken this to mean they feed you in the dark. They forget about the aging population who have difficulty seeing without glasses let alone without light. Better restaurants will often provide you with a small flashlight if you ask.

You’re paying for the meal so you should be able to see what you’re ordering. Talk to the waiter and voice your concerns. Solutions are always available.

Why do Indian Restaurants have dim light?

The lighting has nothing to do with Indian or International. Its to do with the fact that brightly lit places are mostly fast-food joints (KFC, McD etc.), whereas dimly lit places are mostly sit-and-dine-and-a-waiter-will-serve-you kind of places. Both are restaurants by the way. At the same time let me tell you that many Indian restaurants like the Amul restaurants, Barbeque Nation and Haldiram’s are all brightly lit.

Dim lighting is generally preferred because it is more romantic, attracts more affluent clientele and thus higher prices, sets the mood, and it also hides the fact that you are eating plain looking food. Also the crowd is quieter. Such are the places that you will go to if you want to have a quiet dinner with your family.

Bright lighting is preferred in fast-food joints because it promotes energy, activity and attracts all kinds of people, being much more populist on nature. Such places promote enjoyment, loud conversations and a general celebratory attitude.
So, it ultimately boils down to how a restaurant styles itself and who its clientele are.

I have designed lighting for restaurants and this is always a conundrum. If you’ll notice…coffee shops and fast food restaurants are always very brightly lit, while more elegant places (as well as bars and pubs) are more dimly lit. This is in part because some eating establishments want you to finish up, clear out and leave the tables for the next customers. Others encourage you to linger, with soft and romantic lighting, a more home-like atmosphere, because they know that when you do, you feel more relaxed and spend more, and also leave bigger tips. It’s also true that we and our surroundings look our best in soft lighting. If you were to see the way some restaurants look in the harsh light of day, or under brighter lighting (sometimes such lighting exists, for cleaning purposes, but it’s never shown to customers!) you’d see that the tablecloths are not pristinely white, the carpets need replacing, and the woodwork was last painted in 1961. It’s all about aesthetics and emotions.
